In class last night, trying to install the new Mint 17 with Windows 7 as a dual boot and making grub the boot loader.

1st: you need to log into windows and go to ‘All Programs’ ‘Accessories’ then right mouse click on ‘Command Prompt’ and Run As Administrator.

Once the command windows opens type in the following command. chkdsk /f c: and hit enter. Since the drive is in use answer Yes to the question and reboot the machine back into windows and this will fix any disk errors.

2nd: While still in Windows, follow this link to see how…. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/gg309169.aspx

3rd: Now start your new Live-CD or USB Linux and select the Install now icon on the desktop. Follow this link to see how to make the partitions. http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2014/07/02/manual-disk-partitioning-guide-for-linux-mint-17-kde/

Libreoffice just released there newest version of the Open Office Suite. Seems they keep making load a bit faster on each release. Mainly but fixes but works great.

You can download it from http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/#change and pick your *.deb (x86 32 bit or x84 for 64 bit machines)

Next unzip and put the DEBS directory into your Home Directory.

If you want to upgrade and still have the default version that came with your distro, open your Synaptic Package Manager and search for libreoffice and mark all packages that are installed and do a (Mark for Removal) then apply.

Next do the following commands from a terminal window:
cd /home/bob/DEBS remember to change bob to your home directory.
now enter sudo dpkg -i *.deb and hit enter. This will install Libreoffice. When finished delete the DEBS folder from your home directory. (Takes up 200 mb of room)

If you had a short cut on your desktop you will need to trash it and go to the menu button then to office and next add the Libreoffice shortcut to the desktop.

Thats it. Not really all that bad to install. Now your running the newest version of Libreoffice.

    Any questions let me know.

    Bob

Virtualbox does not see any USB devices and assuming you have installed the extension pack for your version of virtualbox your running.

From a command terminal type in ‘groups bob’ change bob to your user name.

This will display all the Groups your in. If you don’t see vboxusers then this is the problem.

So to fix, still in the terminal window type ‘sudo adduser bob vboxuser’ (don’t forget to change to your user name) then type ‘groups bob’ your user name and you should see that you added yourself to the vboxusers group.

Now for it to take affect, log out and then log back in..

    Hope that helped.

I have been playing with the new Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon 2.8.5 and I really have been enjoying it. Everything worked without really having to mess with anything. Seems a lot faster then 17.2 but 17.2 was an upgrade from 17.0 then 17.1 to 17.2.

I did a fresh install and then re-installed all my programs from my Backup Tool and installed a few extras like Chrome, Virtualbox and some others.

I also installed the Nvidia 304 video drive from the Driver Manager program. Xorg worked fine I just like to play with things.

Did find that Brasero does not work. Tried to back up some of my backups to blu-ray but would not work. May have been that the size of the backup over 10 gig was to big for it but all of my Windows backups are over 10 gig in size. Did not try DVD or smaller files because I need it to work for the big files. If not it’s useless to me.

My linux backups are far less than that. I don’t store my data in my /home directory. I keep all my files in a separate data drive. This keeps my backups small.

Since my Linux Mint 17.2 XFCE XFBURN works just fine, I installed that. It only added a few library files but it works great. I installed it using Synaptic Package Manager.

I have Nero 4.x for Linux and that works fine for burning blu-rays but I want the distro software to work so others can use it to. Besides, Nero only burns at 1x in blu-ray mode as the XFBURN is at 4.8x speed, 3 times faster and at a 25 gig burn that really adds up in time! Also depends on the blu-ray disc speed and writer.

As I write this I am burning a blu-ray backup right now. It keep up with a warning message about the size but I pressed on.

So after the burn was complete I copy the big 23 gig file back onto my hard drive to see if there were any errors and that worked great. So XFBURN worked great. That’s the fix for now.

Over all, even though Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon is in beta it seems to work just fine.

In fact I have been using for about a week now. Even though my main distro is Mint 17.2 XFCE. It seems now they are running neck in neck in speed.

If you want to download the ISO for Mint 17.3 here is a link:

But times have changed. Photoshop isn’t the killer app that it used to be. I spend about 90% of my time in Lightroom and only 10% in Photoshop. This is the same for many other professionals. We’ve all switched to the RAW format, so we use RAW photo editors most of the time. Photoshop is often just used for final touch ups.

Developers from multiple Linux distributions and companies today announced collaboration on the “snap” universal Linux package format, enabling a single binary package to work perfectly and securely on any Linux desktop, server, cloud or device. This community is working at snapcraft.io to provide a single publication mechanism for any software in any Linux environment. This release quotes Dell, Samsung, the Linux Foundation, The Document Foundation, Krita, Mycroft, Horizon Computing, contributors to Arch, Debian, OpenWrt, Ubuntu, and several of their related distributions.
